Vassalship

Beitrag von Lothian »

Ok since I'm new to the game a neighboring kingdom has offered a vassalship contract with my village. I was just wondering what are some of the benefits and downfalls of becoming a vassal to a larger kingdom?

Any help in this would be appreciated, I just want to make an informed decision about this.

Dear darkgroove,

a vassalage could be EVERYTHING between a good partnership and a slavery.

What is your current situation? Do you have some free land around? Then first try to annex as much as you can from this free land and wait, if other kingdoms will make you an offer.
If all the land around yours is owned by your neighbor, than his offer is not really an offer :-)

If you own a city with access to the open sea, you can build a port, buy a ship and look for free land in overseas.

The advantages of an vassalage IMHO are:
- You have an ally
- You can get googs, grain etc. fast and cheap if you are in trouble
- You can get some or a lot of land
- If your liege lord is also a vassal of another lord or a greater alliance, others will help you, too

The disadvantages:
- You sometimes have to pay taxes to your liege lord
- You have to do, what your liege want
- You are not really the owner of the land, you got from your liege. You only lease it.

All everything above depends on the agreement between you and your liege. A lot of lords an Tamar are fair to their vassals, so the advantages prevail. But some lords don't think so, so the disadvantages prevail there.

But there are also lords outside, who give you land and goods without force you into a vassalage. Just ask, be a good partner and you can success, too.
Bis denne,
