Greetings Tamarian!!!

Welcome to Tamar

Ok first thing's first, your Email trouble. The only reason you'd ever need to use YAM to view your ToT turn is if you're thinking of backing all your turns up. Otherwise, the ToT client itself will obtain the turn for you, provided you have given it the correct details for your Email account!

When I started on Tamar I decided to register an Email account that was specifically for ToT. No other mail goes there and so it's ideal for my ToT game. Only turns arrive in my inbox at that account.

As for the possibility that you've used YAM to download your turn, I suggest that you take a look for it - and if you find it then forward it back to yourself, being careful not to alter the subject field from it's original content. You can setup YAM such that it doesn't delete mail from the mail server but I haven't looked into how to do it yet. I assume your registration IS complete now and that you see the buttons "Upload" and "download" on the ToT main screen? Bottom right corner?

Other than that, if you pop into the Tavern on IRC in the evening there will be plenty of who will be happy to offer you some good advice and first steps

Once again, welcome to Tamar!

Welcome too Haymigga!!!

Wow so we've got a fair amount of new players now then!! Good stuff, good stuff.

When you get a chance one evening load up your favourite IRC client (which hopefully is AmIRC because it's the best) connect to "irc.euirc.net", port 6667 and then join channel #tales.

During the evening (that's evening for British and German) the room is always fairly busy and there'll always be someone there more than happy to answer any of your newbie questions. Other than that, ask away here and we'll do our best to assist you.

My first piece of advice for you both, and it *could* be extremely important, is do NOT tell anyone where you are (i.e. don't tell them your co-ordinates) at least not until you've got a better idea of where you are yourself.

You may not understand why for the moment, but take it from me it will not be to your advantage if we all know where you are *if* you're in new lands that none of us know about yet

For now, all you want to be doing is feeding your people and moving that Scout around - try and get an idea of the area in which you've settled. Once you've mapped out some land, click on one of the hexes and see if anyone owns it. If it comes up "Owner:LordWhatever" then you don't really have to panick about people finding out where you are. If it comes up "Owner:Unoccupied" then keep your co-ordinates to yourself ok?

Any other questions, feel free to ask away.

Well, I read the book as well but I think that Wolfen left the book sketchy on details on purpose. You are left to find out how a lot of things work on Tamar by yourself, and to be honest it adds to the mystery during the early stages anyway - it's a good thing.

Yes you CAN die in your game but obviously the aim is not to!!! I am still on my FIRST game and I don't think I'd want to start again just yet - it takes a long long long time to build yourself up to a decent stage in ToT and it's a lot to loose if you have to restart. This is also a good thing, it adds to the "risk" factor of the game. When you forge relations with other Lords you must be careful with whom you make friends and whom you make enemies. You wouldn't want to be killed off!!

There *seems* to be a new starter in my lands at the moment - there is a new town I hadn't noticed before with a single scout in it. This is how all new players start so I'm wondering if it's one of you pair!! Possibly not though because Wolfen is putting new players in new lands I think. We'll see next turn when I find out who it is

If it IS one of you two then you will be needing my protection I think. I am facing heavy resistance from Elf armies in that area, and am fighting furiously bloody battles with multiple Elf armies as we speak! If there is a new player in my lands I will make every effort to protect him/her from these evil creatures of the woods.

Wolfen,

Try telling that to my armies who are being slaughtered by these Elves!!! They made the first attack

But perhaps you are right, they are merely trying to protect their realm.

And they are suceeding at the moment too!!

The Granary is extremely important, both to you in your small beginnings, to me, and even to the most powerful of Lords on Tamar.

You must feed your people every turn. If you do not feed them, then they will die and will loose faith in you. If you feed them too much then the people will see you as a generous Lord and more people will join your realm. However, be careful because as your population increases so does the need for corn in your realm. If you have more population than resources to cultivate, you will not be able to feed your people what they need!

When springtime comes you will need to put some corn into the harvest so you can grow more corn for the summer which has to last you all year.

As for import/export issues - they only come into play when you're more advanced

I wont tell you too much, it helps if you can learn a lot for yourself. But I will watch these threads and lend you both a helping hand whenever you seem stuck  I'll give you the general basics of what you need to do - and corn feeding is the most basic and vital of all the things you'll do each turn.

Ok well it's all in the book but I'll give you some pointers of my own for feeding:

In the granary you will see 3 storages. The one on your left is the one you'll use at springtime for the following year's harvest. The one in the middle is the grain you have in storage, and the right-most one is the one you use to feed your people each turn.

Now, on the rightmost storage you'll see two markers - a red one and a green one. The green one sets how much corn the server will feed your people should you forget to upload. The red one is an indicator of how much corn your people will need to feed them for the next quater. Fill the storage under this marker and you are underfeeding your people. Over the marker and you are being generous (or wasteful as the case may be).

On the left most storage you will only see a green marker, except in spring time when a red marker will appear which gives you an idea how much seeding you need to provide in order to get a full harvest for the next year. Fill under it and you wont get a full harvest. Over it and... well I think you pretty much waste it then. Setting the green marker up properly will allow the server to fill your harvest seeding to the correct level, should you be unable to upload a turn during the springtime.

You need to plan your feeding according to your people's needs and the amount of food you have available. If you have plenty of food you can afford to be a bit more generous with your feeding, however it can be better to keep some excess grain over at the end of the year if you have that luxury - next year's harvest may not be so good! On the other hand it can also be good to develop a larger population because this will bring more revenue and your population levels have an effect on other things later on too.

It's something you will need to find a balance for over time

Tamarian,

Ok as far is corn is concerned you don't see what you're developing. The only time you make new corn is when you collect the harvest in the summer, and how good/bad your harvest is depends on wether you put enough grain back into it during the springtime, the weather during the harvest season, and how many mills and graneries you have/need.

As for buildings, there is a way to check development on these. When you go into "build up town" where you can choose what buildings you wish to develop, you'll see a button that looks like an eye. Click on this and you'll get a list of all buildings currently in progress, and when they will be finished. 3 months = 1 turn remember.

Buildings are very important - more so that I first realised. But it is also important to balance your building developments with your current finances. Buildings cost money, so keep an eye on your income and the costs of the building per turn before you decide to errect them

The sawmill is a much needed building so good choice.
